The Team

Javier Wallace, PhD - Postdoctoral Associate, African & African American Studies Department: I noticed a need for this project after learning about Claudius "C.B." Claiborne and Stephen Slade, tracing their connections, and seeing the intentional silences surrounding their contributions. I am confident this project will encourage Duke and its supporters to recognize CB Claiborne's inedible contributions to its growth and prominence since his arrival.

Damilare Bello -  PhD Student at Duke University and graduate project manager: My interest in the African Diaspora and how counternarratives challenge expressions of racism led me to this project. It has been six weeks of learning and working toward a more just representation of important actors whose legacies benefit us all.

Sophia Hanani - Undergraduate Student at Duke University: Before coming onto this project, I had previous research experience dealing with Duke's tobacco history. Our collective research has allowed me to tell a greater interconnected story about Black exploitation and how that profit manifests in greater institutions, as well as our daily lives.

Hanrui Huang - Student at Duke University: As a fan and an intern for Duke Men's Basketball, this program means a lot to me. Learning about C.B. and his history as well as his connection to tobacco in Danville made me realize how much of Duke's history needs to be unearthed.
